Unless it’s a special occasion, parking in a city garage isn’t free.
But charging up an electric car? It won’t cost a penny.
As Tesla strives to expand its network, Norfolk will receive free charging stations. The company, which makes plug-in cars, wants to donate a mix of Tesla and universal charging equipment, valued at about $550 per station.
Deputy City Manager Mike Goldsmith said the city applied to participate in a Tesla program and wants to install 100 stations, mostly in its garages.
Councilwoman Andria McClellan urged staff to spread them across Norfolk.
Taxpayers will foot the electric bill, about $1.50 per charge.
Norfolk will have the option to “shut off the spigot,” said City Manager Doug Smith, if demand soars.
Tesla has said it wanted to increase its charging locations to 10,000 supercharging stations and 15,000 wall-mounted chargers by the end of 2017. Having accessible chargers nationwide is crucial for electric car makers to gain the confidence of buyers, who might feel anxious about traveling in vehicles that rely solely on battery power.
A handful of charging places exist already in Norfolk. MacArthur Center, Scope Arena and Pretlow Library have stations. Thrift Store USA on Little Creek Road and Press 626 in Ghent also offer car charging. JANAF Shopping Yard has a 24-hour plaza of six superchargers.
