The electronic “brains” that control Tesla Inc.’s Autopilot are about to get much faster. In a series of tweets responding to a report on Electrek.co Tesla CEO Elon Musk said a new chip would be installed in all new production cars in about six months that improves Autopilot performance between 500% and 2000%.
In one tweet, Musk explained the move, saying “ This is a simple replacement of the Autopilot computer. Will be done free of charge for those who ordered full self-driving.”
The cost for those who didn’t order the Full Self-Driving Capability package, or FSD, Musk tweeted “I believe it’s $5k.” FSD has been available since October, 2016. The system is designed to allow drivers to operate their vehicle with no hands on the steering wheel, but Tesla has recommended they do so. Tesla says FSD is designed to detect “hard and soft objects,” using eight surround cameras providing 360-degree visibility at a range of 250 meters, along with 12 ultrasonic sensors and forward-facing radar.
Tesla’s Autopilot system has been under close scrutiny after being tied to several crashes, some fatal. The company sent updates to customers in 2016 after an Ohio man was killed in Florida when his Model S hit a tractor trailer while Autopilot was turned on. The update was aimed at preventing drivers from taking their hands off the steering wheel or looking away from the road for long periods of time.
Last March, a driver using Autopilot died when his Tesla Model X crashed into a highway barrier in Mountain View, Calif. Tesla said the driver did not heed cues from the system to take control of the vehicle.
This move to a faster chip presents Tesla with a production challenge as it attempts to crank out enough new chips to accommodate the hundreds of thousands of older cars that will require a retrofit, in addition to new cars built once the chip is available.
