Elenvi bids for new national car project to build EVs - Paul Tan's Automotive News

On Monday, we brought you news of what was reportedly one of the bidders for the new national car project (NNCP), and now here’s another one. Bernama reports that a company called Elenvi Otomotif is also preparing a proposal to build electric vehicles in Malaysia, also with RM5 billion in private investment.

That’s according to Malaysian Institute of Economic Research (MIER) chairman Tan Sri Kamal Salih, who said that the money would be used to build an EV manufacturing plant in Negeri Sembilan, jointly developed by Elenvi and an unnamed local investor.

“MIER has been tasked by Elenvi and the investor to conduct a feasibility study and business, investment and financial plan which will be presented to the prime minister [Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad] for his consideration,” he said. “This is a private sector investment and it will be up to him to decide if it should be our third national car.”

Kamal added that the first electric car showcase will be launched by Mahathir in October, and that the vehicles will be designed for both local and export markets. The institute had earlier signed several memorandums of understanding (MoU) with 20 strategic partners for the EV project, including Elenvi.

Elenvi will go up against Alam Perkasa Consortium (APC), which plans to set up a new carmaker, the Malaysian International Motor Company (Mimco). It aims to debut its first car, the Alif electric SUV, at the 2020 Geneva Motor Show before launching it in 2022, with targeted global sales of 60,000 units a year.
