So, just what kind of truck is Tesla’s Cybertruck, anyway?
For anyone who has seen an image of the Cybertruck — or spotted it in the wild on the streets of Los Angeles — the vehicle is instantly recognizable. It certainly doesn’t look like any typical truck.
Tesla has now said just what kind of truck it is, though, saying in a letter filed with the California Air Resources Board (CARB) that the Cybertruck should be classified as a “Class 2B-3 medium-duty vehicle.”
So, what does that mean?
Trucks, like all vehicles, are classified by how much they weigh. Class 2B trucks have a weight limit range of 8,501 pounds to 10,000 pounds, fully loaded, as classified by the Federal Highway Administration. Trucks that are on the road right now, and fall into the 2B class, include the Ford F-250, the Dodge Ram 2500, the Nissan Titan XD and the GMC Sierra 2500. While they aren’t the biggest trucks consumers can drive off an auto dealer’s lot, they are still big rides, taking up quite a bit of road, and parking space.
“While we have not yet begun production of the Cybertruck, we expect it to have a towing capacity of 7,500-14,000+ lbs., and it should very likely qualify as a “Class 2B-3” medium-duty vehicle,” Sarah Van Cleve, Tesla’s senior managing policy adviser, wrote in the letter sent to CARB.
Van Cleve added that Tesla has “already received more than 250,000 orders for the Cybertruck,” apparently confirming numbers that Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted out in the days following the Cybertruck’s Nov. 21 debut.Tesla also told CARB that it supports stronger rules around CARB’s Advanced Clean Truck rule, which is meant to speed up deployment of zero-emission, medium-and heavy-duty vehicles. CARB has proposed excluding such trucks from the clean truck rule until 2027.
